23 Mar What is a Circle Take?!
On set, it was almost impossible to keep from bursting out laughing. After the actress nailed her performance of a scene, the director called out to the script supervisor, “Circle that take!”. The script supervisor circled the take number on the script and let the director know that they had 2 clean takes, and the crew readied for the next scene.
A circle take on a film set is the mark of a great performance. It’s a mark specifically for the editor that says “start here, this is the good stuff”. Hearing it means a job well done, not only by the actor but the entire crew, and it signals to everyone on set that production is running smoothly. It means the boom pole is out of the shot, that the lighting looks good, that the actor is enunciating properly, it means a million things all at once, but mostly it is a mark of success at the micro level of production.
When we set out to build a new video production company, the idea of a circle take really fit. We want to build with small successes that are born from preparation and hard work and consistent effort.
